SunPy Database Browser Discussion on 2nd June

Steven, Nabil, Stuart and I had the 5th weekly meeting regarding the database browser.data explorer for SunPy. We also had a special guest Eric Jeschke, Software Engineer at NAOJ and the lead developer of Ginga. The primary agenda of the meeting was the discussion of the features in Ginga that can be used for the development of Database browser plug-in and what were the future development plans for Ginga. A few points and notes from our meeting are:

  1. A few existing plug-ins that Ginga offers like Ruler, Tables, etc were discussed.
  2. The basic framework, history and utility of Ginga was discussed.
  3. The various graphical library support which Ginga offered, like GTK and Qt. Ginga does not support Tk falling back mechanism for nowand the reference viewer does not support it. Also, it was decided that providing support for Tk falling back is kind of waste of time. The Graphical Backend Abstraction facility present in Ginga was also discussed.
  4. The use of FBrowser and Catalogue plug-in were discussed which facilitate the File System browsing etc.
  5. The Astronomical and Solar Co-ordinate handling capabilities of Ginga were discussed and the future co-ordinate handling capabilities of SunPy were discussed.
